A SWANSEA Valley man sold thousands of pounds worth of fake designer sportswear on the internet under the trading name "sexy rexy", a court has heard.

David Wayne Jones, from Ystradgynlais, imported counterfeit clothes and trainers from China supposedly from famous names such as Adidas, Nike, Abercrombie and Fitch and Ralph Lauren.

When trading standards officers from Powys Council raided his College Row house they found Pounds 30,000 worth of stock.

Rob Brown, prosecuting on behalf of the authority, told Brecon Magistrates' Court that test purchases of clothes had been carried out from a seller called "sexyrexy2008" on internet trading site ebaY.

"Sexy rexy" turned out to be self-employed tiler Jones -- and the goods turned out to be fakes. A raid at his replica clothing house revealed the haul of Chinese knock-offs.

Mr Brown said: "It is Powys Council's view that Mr Jones was conducting the wholesaling of counterfeit goods." Jones had admitted eight charges of selling counterfeit goods at an earlier hearing.

Cassie Jenkins, in mitigation, said her client's tiling business had been struggling during the economic slump, and that he had turned to internet trading.

Counterfeit "He did not initially know that the goods were counterfeit," she said.

"He bought them from China because they were so cheap." She said he had made around Pounds 4,000 from the sales and used the money to pay for both his children to attend university.

"This was not high living or anything like that. He was helping to fund his children at university -- that is what the money was for," she said.

She added that he was going through a divorce and was suffering emotional and financial stress when he committed the offences.

Miss Jenkins said Jones was embarrassed and accepted responsibility for his actions.

The court heard Jones was currently working in a factory but was hoping to return to tiling.

He was given a 12-month community order with a requirement that he complete 200 hours of unpaid work in the community. He was also ordered to pay costs of Pounds 6,200. The court issued a destruction order for the seized clothes.

Chairwoman of the bench Hazel Thomas said: "We have given you full credit for your early guilty plea, and for the fact you show full remorse.".
