PEERING down a microscope, her white lab coat immaculate, Kate Barrett looked every inch the efficient, clinical scientist - much the same as all her colleagues grafting away around her. Every inch, that is, except for her feet. Anyone who happened to glance under the bench where she sat surrounded by test tubes would have seen a flash of bright red against the clinical white. And the two-inch heeled, studded red suede Marc Jacobs creations weren't the only rather frivolous addition she would bring to the lab.

So perhaps it was inevitable that Kate would eventually opt to leave the scientific world behind and enter the fashion one instead.
Last month, she took the plunge and set up her own online clothing boutique, The Moon and Mars.
Despite her passion for clothes, it wasn't an easy move for Kate, who had devoted years to her studies, both at university and then in a variety of scientific jobs in London and Edinburgh, where she lives now with her husband.
"Although I really enjoyed my job, and am still incredibly interested in environmental science, I found myself on the web an awful lot," she explains. "I had developed a real passion rolex replica for internet shopping, particularly for smaller retailers. It was such a dream to think about running my own."
Now living that dream, she talks passionately about the clothing she imports from the United States, Paris, Finland, Denmark and Hong Kong - allowing her to become the exclusive UK stockist for many brands.
"Leaving my job was a worry for me, but I feel I am enjoying myself so much. I'm certainly not doing it to make myself millions, but I am getting to promote designers I feel are worthy of it."
Her styles are quirky, striking and often unique, epitomising her determination to give shoppers a break from mainstream retailing.
The Moon and Mars offers stylish items - from dresses and shoes, to romper suits and necklaces - from GBP 70 to GBP 250.
"I'm certain there is a market for The Moon and Mars because, at the moment, people buying these New York fashion ranges, for example, must do so via the US, making the customer pay for things like shipping. I want to bring these clothes to a whole new market."

It took four years of careful planning to get The Moon and Mars website up and running, but after only a month of trading, expansion plans are in the pipeline.
"It's been the right move for me and I'm feeling positive about it," she says. "It's been great fun so far and I've been getting to go to New York and Paris which is amazing. I'm also enjoying working for myself."
Canadian-born Kate was educated in Nova Scotia and then at Cornell
